Study Abroad Program
Finca La Yuca Agriculture Lab
Environmental Sustainability of Island Communities
Our study abroad program is the core of Puerto Rico Environmental Action Lab. We provide students with an opportunity to participate in hands on service learning related to environmental resilience and sustainability. Students can earn up to six academic credits for a three week intensive experience and conduct anthro-environmental research. Our study abroad program is offered through CUNY.
Bringing Back Power
Hurricane Maria wrecked the Puerto Rico's power grid. It knocked down 80% of its power lines. Over a million customers across the island were left without power. Many Puerto Rican's died in the aftermath of the hurricane due to the blackout. Hospitals were unable to function without electricity. As a result, the sick and elderly were unable to access treatment and medication. Over a year after the hurricane, towns in Puerto Rico, especially those in mountainous regions with large elderly populations, still don't have power. Puerto Rico Environmental Action Lab is collaborating with Caney Quinto Mundo, organic farm and indigenous center, to build solar panels and micro-grids in these forgotten communities.
